ELEVEN

The room wasn’t as bright when I woke up. The lights that were so harsh earlier had been turned off. That made my face hurt a little less, but my arm ached. I looked down at it wrapped in a splint of some kind. I heard a squeak on the floor and froze. My mind was fuzzy, but I knew I wasn’t alone. The squeak got louder and I struggled with the blankets one handed. I had to hide. I looked about frantically. Where was Rain? Why wasn’t he here? Did they hurt him too?”

I struggled with the swing arm on the side of the bed and felt tears on my face as I tried to grasp the latch one handed. My heart was pounding and I was sure this was it. The side finally released and I slid down off the stretcher, the IV tethering me there like a prisoner.

“Winter, stop, sweetheart,” his voice came from behind me, and I sagged against the bed. I felt him catch me and hold me up, setting a cup down on the bed.

“I heard squeaking and thought it was them,” I cried, relief pouring out of me in the form of tears.

“I’m sorry. I thought I could get a cup of coffee before you woke up. Let me help you back onto the bed.”

He helped me back up and I realized at some point my clothes were taken off and I was wearing a hospital gown. “How did I get in this?” I asked him, pulling on the gown.

“Autumn had to cut the sweatshirt off to get your cast off,” he explained and I felt my cheeks redden and I closed my eyes. “Don’t worry, I stepped out of the room.”

I nodded, my eyes still closed. “Where’s Autumn?”

“She’s arranging things.” He cleared his throat and didn’t make eye contact.

“What things? What did the x-rays show?”

He rubbed my shoulder to keep me calm. “Both bones in your arm are broken, and they aren’t aligned properly anymore. Autumn will have to do surgery to repair the bones so they heal.”

“I’m not surprised by that. I just didn’t want to tell you and make you worry,” I admitted.

He threw his head back and laughed. It was a welcome sound in the darkness of the room and made me feel like something in life was worth the effort I was putting into it.

“Honey, I’ve been worried since the moment I saw you huddled in that cabin.” He smiled sadly, the memory not a happy one for him.

His hand moved to my face, the skin sore and tight where he rubbed with his thumb. “Your face is fractured, too. Autumn sent your x-rays to a specialist and he’s coming in to fix it. He’s a plastic surgeon and when he’s done you won’t know you even had anything done. I promise.”

I shook my head, “No, no one else can know I’m here. It will heal. It’s healed all by itself tons of times. I know what to do.
